During this time period there were also three meetings per year held by the Board which included discussion on matters such as taxation, public works and social reforms such as alcohol prohibition. In 1835, an act was passed giving township status to Freehold Township but not including it within Monmouth County; this act caused some tension between Monmouth County and township officials however no physical conflict took place as both entities continued to operate separately through their respective Boards of Chosen Men committees affairs which continued despite this interface problem until 1862 when townshipStatus was recognized by state law as part of Monmouth County Middlesex County then annexed Freehold Township on May 25th 1866 pursuant to an act entitled An Act Annexing Certain Townships into Middlesex Co., N.J., 2nd Session (1866). All residents therein became county residents effective July 1st following annexation Today's freehold community started out small with just 36 people living in what is now downtown Freehold when it became an incorporated municipality on Feb 10th 1956 with Mayor Harry Auerbach leading the charge Under Borough government control through 1969-1974 Mayor Harry Auerbach led efforts to improve transportation infrastructure including construction of new roads and bridges; major projects included making central square a main shopping area while also increasing services available at Haddonfield Mall & Veterans Affairs Medical Center
