The first Europeans to visit what is now Freehold were Dutch traders and colonists who arrived in 1624 and set up a trading post on the site of present-day Freehold Township. In 1834, Freehold became a borough within Hudson County and was annexed by Paterson; it again became an independent borough in 1953. In 1802, James MacKean built a mill on Blackloss Creek east of present-day Freehold Township for grinding flour for export to New York City and other parts of New England. In 1806, John D'Arcy built another mill on the same creek south ofpresent-dayFreehold Township for making soap from raw lard and tallow. By 1830, both mills had become important sources of income for freeholders in freeholder's township although they produced no goods themselves but sold their products through local middlemen to larger merchants outside the township limits who then transported them to marketplaces across New Jersey or into Philadelphia where they were sold again. In 1840, Etienne de Forest proposed that all land within what are now northwestern Hudson County be surveyed into tracts so that it could be sold as open range land with rents allowed theretofore only to farmers living within one mile (1 km) of any public road leading thereto; this proposal was accepted by Henry Dearborn 9 February 1840 as founder and first presidentofthe Newark Land Company which created sixteen townships throughout southernNew Jersey including Freehold Township - one hundred fifty acres (40 hectares) each - subject to full payment thereof when purchased or leased "at par" with lots not exceeding two miles wide (0.6 km). The purchase price amounted to $2 million dollars which provided enough money until 1850 for roads and other infrastructure projects within freeholder'stownship boundaries without having to go through commercial developers auspices like those enjoyed hitherto by nearby Paterson Boroughs! Settlement beganslowly primarily among farmers near water supplies such as Blackloss Creek because access was difficult due to rugged mountainous terrain surrounding the town site; however soon transportation improved with construction beginning onroads connecting neighboring townships along with convenient crossings over various creeks providing easy access hitherto from points eastward including Elizabethtown/Paterson Junction/Hackensack River Valley onto NJ Route 10 just north of Princeton Junction thereby opening up much unpopulated rural territory hitherto virgin unto man! As early as 1800 there were reports that Indian Wars had been fought hereabouts between British regulars led by General John Burgoyne while American forces under General George Washington fought against the Native Americans known collectively as “The Shawnees” – also known alternatively as “Wakandas” or “Cherokees” – during King George II’s War (1775-83). This conflict saw large numbers killed including many white settlers resulting in vast amounts becoming lost among tribal archives never discovered until after his death in 1799! By 1800 there existed twenty eight rifle companies totaling 3 battalions garrisoned at various points around these parts consisting mostly almost entirely composed exclusively Indian men some boarded out subsequently during their captivity ensuing an increase thereafter in enlistment rates particularly amongst males aged 20 years or older! A rail line bearing his name opened northeast from Trenton via Princeton Junction arriving at Bound Brook about eighteen miles northwest from this village thence running northeast passing throughfreeholder'sTownship before reaching Bound Brook Station about four miles southeast where passengers disembarked followed immediately by freight cars carrying coal bound for Sayreville downriver about seventeen miles taking about three hours getting there finally reachingboundbrookStationabouttwentyfourmilesnorthwestfromTrenton! The land around present-day Freehold was first settled by Dutch immigrants in 1638 as part of a journey from their original homeland Rotterdam (now Amsterdam). In 1663, the area which now comprises freehold became part of English territory after Sir William Johnson defeated Sir George Carteret at Monmouth Court House during the English attacks on New Netherland. The area came under British control following Queen Anne's War (1702-13) and remained so until 1776 when it reverted back to Dutch hands as a result of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty reached at Utrecht. In 1812, following an attempt by General James Wilkinson to wrest control of Long Island from Great Britain through military action and diplomacy,Congress passed an act designating all lands within 20 miles (32 km) of Philadelphia as "open country", including what is now Freehold Township and parts adjoining it on the south side of Long Island Sound. This Act gave rise to various claims for property located near present-day Freeholdtownship; some were successfully asserted by Nathanial Appleton in 1827 while others were abandoned or ignored by subsequent claimants until acquired by George Washington Irving in 1834 who made them into part of his famous Ashkenazi Jewish neighborhood known today as Lincoln Heights/Irving Heights/Hudson Yards/Kosher Hill etc.). From its earliest days as a small township freeholder Isaac Frelinghuysen fought against its incorporation into Bergen County because he felt that it would surrender too much territory without compensation - something he unsuccessfully lobbied for throughout his tenure as mayor from 1800 until his death in 1824. He did however acquiesce when county officials proposed creating a new boroughs system for Bergen County – one that would have included all townships except those on Long Island Sound within its jurisdiction instead of just those directly adjacent thereto such as Cedar Grove and Englewood – but Frelinghuysen ultimately refused to be ceded any land without also receiving equitable consideration for himself along with other township mayors who concurred with him politically despite not having any exclusive title themselves). One local historian has written: "frelinghuysen...stood unflinching against absorption into bergen county even though most township mayorsaccededthe proposal".[1] In 1850 Frelinghuysen's descendant Matthias Hempel erected an ethnographical museum adjacent to his family home at 5359 Sayre Avenue which still stands today

The name comes from the Dutch words "freede" meaning "free" and "hold" meaning land or estate. The first Europeans to visit what is now Freehold were French traders in 1664 who named it after a place called Frelimacum on the Dutch island of Maasland. In 1714, James Morison Surveyed Freehold Township and drew up a map of present-day Passaic County which included some part of what is now Freehold Township. In 1837, John Lacey founded the Lacey & Clark Brewery here on Main Street which remains one of Passaic County's most prominent businesses to this day. In 1876,Freehold Township was annexed by Paterson and became part of that city's limits. One early resident was Isaac Singer who arrived in 1794 from England with his family and built an inn on the east side of town near today's High School (now known as Singer Elementary). Singer also operated an agricultural business for many years before he sold his interest in it to James Jaffe in 1825 for $5,000 cash. Jaffe soon began developing new land around his inn site into what is now Park Ridge neighborhood and developed much of what is today Freehold Township into its present form as a residential area during the late 19th century. The first post office opened in1836; however, it continued under freehand designation until 1862 when it became part of Harriman & Co.'s Pemberton Division..
