Freehold, New Jersey is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough's population was 15,831. The name "Freehold" was given to the community by Dutch settlers who named it for their exemption from paying taxes on tobacco products. The first European sighting of Freehold took place in 1624 when Captain John Smith and his men passed through what is now Freehold Township on their way to find a new land grant. In 1764, the township was formed from portions of Bergen Township and developed as a farming town with herds of cows and pigs being raised. In 1834, part of Middlesex County became attached to Union County; this included Freehold Township within Union County until 1868 when it became part of Middlesex Borough which incorporated on April 14th that year. On February 11th 1913 Freehold Borough President Harry Jaffe announced plans to annex all of Orangeburg Township including the village center in order to create an even larger municipality with an area of . The annexation proposal met opposition from many residents who contended that they had been born and raised in Orangeburg since before its incorporation into Freehold Borough and were not affected by the proposed merger. After much public discussion and debate over several months, officials finally voted 3-2 against annexing Orangeburg Village Center as part of the larger municipality. The vote demonstrated how important village center issues were to some residents while also illustrating how difficult it can be for communities to merge without affecting adjacent neighborhoods. On July 1st 1978 freeholders elected Mayor Edward Korman as their representative on a one (1) year term beginning on July 1st 1979; he served until December 31st 1979 when he resigned due to illness. On January 8th 1980 former Mayor Korman was re-elected with 99% OF THE BALLOT VOTE! He served until May 4th 1980 when he resigned again due to illness once again leaving office after only one year under his watch! The first Europeans to visit the area now known as Freehold were Portuguese and Spanish explorers in 1524. The Dutch took over the region in 1664, and by 1714 it had been ceded to the British Crown. The British set up a military post here in 1778, and Freehold became an agricultural town. In 1814, it became part of New Jersey because of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution. The town was taken over by the United States during World War II as a strategic location for production of munitions; during that time, many factories were built here. After the war, Freehold declined and its population fell below 100 people until it increased relatively rapidly in the late 1960s when manufacturing jobs disappeared and new housing began to be built. In recent years freeholders have worked to maintain local control over many aspects of their community including education, governance, planning and zoning regulations.
