Glassboro, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population of the town was 23,083 at the 2010 census. The first European settlement in Glassboro was made on December 3, 1774, when Nicholas Tickell and his brother-in-law John Armstrong established a farmstead on the north side of what is now called Tryon Street. A post office was established in Glassboro on October 10, 1806, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1869. The first school in Glassboro was built by Rev. Samuel Palmer around 1812. It served as a day school until 1865. In 1868, Glassboro became an incorporated municipality with a vote of 7 to 1 to allow for self-government within the limits of the boroughship of Northville (later part of Union City). In 1903–1904, glassmaking magnate Augustus Kelley founded Kelley Paper Company near where he later built his home and business campus now known as Rutgers University's Livingston Campus. In 1907 Kelley donated land for what would become Princeton University's Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). IAS opened its doors on September 15, 1907 with doctoral degrees from five American scientists: James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1929), Oliver Lodge (1872–1957), Willis Carrier (1870–1953), Gustavus Adolphus Goodwin (1873–1964), and Harlow Shapley(1878–1963). The community experienced growth during World War II as military bases were set up throughout New Jersey; Glassboro became one of the largestdependent municipalities within Hunterdon County after war production boomed there at an unprecedented rate due to wartime demand for materials such as munitions and rubber products. Glassboro, New Jersey is a town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,876. The name "Glassboro" is derived from English settlement of Glassboro Township on the north side of the Monmouth Canal in 1777. The first settlers were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians who arrived about 1780. On November 5, 1816, Glassboro became a part of Middlesex County and was renamed for Major General James P. Woodbury (1763-1836), an American general during the War of 1812 and Governor of New Jersey (1822-24). From its incorporation as a borough on April 14, 1845 until it became a township on January 1, 1960, Glassborough had been one of four townships in Hunterdon County; all others had been incorporated into other counties since 1905. The Main Street Bridge across the Monmouth River opened in 1888 and is now known as "the Iron Bridge". The first post office at Glassboro was established on February 12, 1827; it was moved to its present location in 1865. In 1860s and 1870s glass factories were built near what is now downtown Glassboro by local merchants to meet wartime demand for war supplies such as artillery shells and bullets. One such factory still exists today - JB Wolk & Sons - which made glass windows for cars beginning in 1915 until production stopped after World War II because of advances in plastics technology. The town of Glassboro was founded in 1795 by Captain John Cook, who surveyed the area. The first settler in Glassboro was Samuel Sellers, who built a cabin on the west bank of the Hackensack River. In 1812, General James Krantz founded the city of Paterson and glassblowing began in earnest in Glassboro. The early days were difficult for both towns as they competed for trade with New York City. By 1836, Glassboro had a population of 350 and Paterson had a population of 2,000. In 1846, Abraham Lincoln was elected President and many businesses moved to Washington D.C., but glassblowing continued to thrive in Glassboro. By 1860, the town had a population of 3,500 and it became an important industrial center for opioids production during the Civil War. After the war ended, the economy fell apart and by 1870 Glassboro had only 1 store remaining; however, opioid production continued until around 1920 when it went out of business completely. The townspeople rebuilt their downtown following World War II with help from United States Steel Corporation which donated land for a steel plant addition that eventually became home to numerous businesses including Macy's Department Store and JCPenney department store before being torn down in 1984 due to environmental issues. In recent years there has been renewed interest in revisitingGlassboro as it is now one of two small towns located within commuting distance (the other being Carteret) that still maintain some degree of local commerce despite having no central city services or governmental structure whatsoever save for two villages - Northumberland County Court House and Township Hall - serving as quasi-governmental bodies providing limited services such as road maintenance and zoning regulations affecting only these two areas without any real authority over either village beyond these rudimentary mechanisms.
