Glen Rock is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,878 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Paterson and is part of the Paterson–Newark, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to sight what would become Glen Rock was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he sailed past the mouth of the Hockenheim River on his journey from Italy to North America. The area now known as Glen Rock was then called "Rochester" and had been settled by Dutch colonists in 1623 as part of a land grant from King Charles II of England to Anthony Wright and others. The township was established on February 14, 1813, by order of Governor James Broome. The community's name originated with its founder Nicholas Biddle (1765-1830). Biddle arrived in America in 1784 and bought 640 acres (2 km²) near present-day Glen Rock for $10 per acre ($640/km²). In 1813 Biddle donated 50 acres (20 hectares) to form what would become Glen Rock Township. His donation met with little resistance after it had been decided that a new township would be created within Middlesex County for those who had relocated there since its establishment. From its inception until 1861, much development took place within what are now parts of both GlenRock Township and Paterson village proper because all land east of Main Street—that is, outside the limits originally delimited by Great Falls Road and Ridge Road—was annexed by either township or villages during this time period without any formal vote or process other than banding together farmers who desired annexation onto their own soil. This resulted in many valuable tracts being added to both townships over time while also compromising some semblance of local government service because no one wanted their territory taken away completely without compensation or an opportunity for negotiation or rebuttal should they feel they were wronged.
