Lodi was founded in 1739 by Nicholas Lodi, who purchased the town from the Lenape tribe. The original settlers were Quakers. In 1834, the first section of Trenton Township was created from parts of Lodi and Lumberton township. In 1857,lectricity was brought to Lodi when a line was built between Trenton and Camden. On October 11, 1938, the New Jersey statehood referendum resulted in a yes vote for statehood and Lodi became a city on November 3rd that year.
