Gun targets have been a feature of Plainfield, New Jersey since at least the 1800s. The first gun target in the town was erected in 1795 by Captain John Fenton. At that time, there were only pistols and muskets available for shooting. Rifle practice was not common in the early 1800s, so target shooting became more popular. The first rifle targets in Plainfield came from England and were made to look like human heads. They were used as training tools for artillery members. In 1827, Captain David French erected a larger target which still stands today on Center Street in plain view of all who come to shoot at it. Captain James Caldwell installed a largegunnery range in 1834 which served as the nucleus for what would become Middleton Park Shooting Ground later that year. The ranges continued to be used until 1895 when they were replaced by modern gun clays located on Broad and Maple Streets respectively. In 1857, Colonel George Wright set up a small cannon factory near where he lived on South Main Street and began making muzzleloaders for local farmers and businesses. This led to the creation of what is now known as Wright’s Gun Factory which continues to produce firearms today. The handguns produced there are still some of the most famous guns in America – such as those produced by Colt Firearms Company – but also include many antique firearms too!

It is the third-largest city in Morris County and the second-largest city in New Jersey after Newark. The City of Paterson ranks first in population within Mercer County. The area that would become Plainfield was originally part of what is now Princeton Township and was called "Haddon Township". On March 25, 1781, Jameson Livingston patented to himself and his heirs (theoriginal proprietors) of all the land lying between Sandy Hook Creek on the north side of Princeton University () and Rahway Creek on the south side (). This included what is now PlainFIELD The Town of Plainfield was formed from portions of Haddon Township on April 3, 1836. The township boundaries were redrawn on July 1, 1869 when it became part of Morris County. At its inception, Plainfield had a total population of 9 inhabitants: 5 men and 4 women. In 1870–71 when Morris County became an independent county due to statehood movement efforts within New Jersey, Plainfield's population swelled to 21 residents: 10 men and 11 women. By 1880, it had reached 33 residents; 12 men and 15 women In 1886–87 plainfield's population topped 40 citizens for only the second time ever – this time because of an influx from Trenton which had just been founded as a town by Nicholas Gibbs (a Cazenovian). With growth came development including new housing developments such as Oneonta Village which stands today along Rahway Avenue south of I-95 near White Marsh Mall As economic activity increased so did civic pride among local residents who began to develop their own downtown plaza with streetscape improvements executed by architects such as George Wirtz & Sons known then as “The Gents” or simply “The Gents” while also erecting large post office buildings such as First National Bank located at 222 Main Street followed soon thereafter by other civic institutions like Masonic Lodge No. 517 located at 209 Elm Street
