Secaucus, NJ is a borough in New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the borough had a population of 42,043. The name Secaucus derived from the Dutch word "sek" meaning "a small stream," and "catus" meaning "town." The first European settlers in what is now Secaucus were Dutch farmers who arrived in 1624. They named their farm 'Nieuwstedt' (Newsett). In 1708, John Hackett founded an Arsenal at this location to provide arms for the British against France. The town was originally called Hackettstown after John's father. In 1871, it became part of Bergen County and was renamed Secaucus after James Auchinleck, 1st Baron Auchinleck. In 1907 the Borough Council adopted a resolution to change its name to Secaucus because of its location on Route 9 (the original route between Newark and Manhattan). This made it one of only two New Jersey towns that did not receive their own post office until 1915. Since then, mail has been delivered via courier services such as Federal Express or UPS instead. The borough shares borders with Union City and Brick Township to the north and east; East Rutherford to the south; Paramus to the west; and Westwood towards Newark Bay

Secaucus, New Jersey is a small town located in Hudson County, New Jersey. It was founded in 1788 by General John Burgoyne and his troops during the American Revolution. The name "Secaucus" comes from the Native American word "seck-a-wahtuh". The town has a population of just over 10,000 people today and it is the smallest municipality in New Jersey. Secaucus was once home to major manufacturing plants such as ConAgra Foods and United States Steel. Today, its economy revolves around healthcare, education, and research institutions. The history of Secaucus begins with one man - General John Burgoyne. Burgoyne was a British general who fought against the French in North America during the Revolutionary War. After learning of King George III's plans to send large numbers of soldiers eastward for war against France, Burgoyne decided to come west instead and help fight on the side of America. He arrived in America on October 20th, 1787 – three days after the Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress! Burgoyne's forces first occupied what is now Secaucus Township on January 1st, 1788. The town was named for General Burgoyne himself – although he never actually lived here (he later moved to Saratoga Springs). At first there were only a few hundred residents living in Secaucus; most people came from nearby Milford or Essex Junction. But within months of its founding, Secaucus had started to grow rapidly – thanks largely to its location at the crossroads between two important Routes 1 and 3! In 1812, when NY Statehood became an issue during the presidential campaign of Andrew Johnson (who later became president), Secaucus offered its mayoralty to Johnson’s rival Martin Van Buren (the man who would become Vice President). But Van Buren won anyway and took office in November 1812 – only four months after becoming Mayor! In spite of this short lifespan as Mayor (or because of it), van Buren did manage some important things forSecaucus: he built several public buildings including a courthouse and schools; he also started construction on what is now known as “The Borough Hall”; and he developed plans for creating a water system that would eventually serve all OFHECC employees!
