The company was started by Captains William Westfall and Samuel Merrill with the goal of providing this service to naval officers and their families living in Elizabeth City. The company was first located at what is now known as Sandersons Wharf on Bulls Head River. By 1853, the company had moved its operations to what is now known as Second Street between York and Neptune Streets. During World War II, gun cleaning products became popular due to their effectiveness in removing dirt, oil, and other contaminants from firearms. Many local businesses became suppliers of these products and Somers Point soon became one of the most well-known areas forgun cleaning in the region. Somers Point is a small town in the state of New Jersey, located in Monmouth County. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. Somers Point is part of the Garden State and is bordered by Neptune Township to the north, Union Township to the east, and South Monmouth County to the south. The first settler in Somers Point was Hugh Hoyt who arrived in 1764. The town was platted in 1775 by George Washington and named for John Somers (1672-1759), an Englishman who had settled near Perth Amboy, New Jersey in 1684. In 1802, John D'Augereau, commander of French forces during American independence declared himself captain general of all North America and ordered his army to march on Newark, New Jersey. D'Augereau's force reached Somers Point on July 10th but failed to land because bad weather prevented them from disembarking their warships at Sandy Hook Ferry. Some early businesses included a tannery operated by Nicholas Biddle (1787-1857) which still stands today on Main Street; a gristmill built around 1800 by Ebenezer Dodge; a shoemaker’s shop run by Elisha Phillips; an inn with ten rooms opened by Nicholas Des Moines in 1813; and a post office established with one room on Broadway Avenue serving as its mailing address until 1853 when it moved across Broadwalk into adjacent Union Station where it continued to serve until 1907 when it closed due to lack of mail service. In 1821–22 an athletic club known as "The Buccaneers" played football against local high schools during summer months while instruction took place at Bethel Academy also located in nearby Neptune Township. The team disbanded due to lack of interest soon after but some evidence suggests that players may have returned subsequent year as early as 1826 though this cannot be confirmed unequivocally given that no records survive from that time period pertaining specifically thereto. In 1830 entrepreneur Julius Wolcott bought 1/4 mile (1 km) square lot containing buildings now used within boundaries of Somers Point Landing Development Limited Partnership for $3 per acre (0·90 sq mi).
