The land that later became South Plainfield was first settled by English colonists in 1675 as part of what is now Middlesex County. The original name for this area was "Newfields". In 1714, an act of Congress named South Plainfield after Colonel John South who led a British military expedition against Native Americans on Long Island. At that time there were only about 50 families living in what would eventually become South Plainfield Township. In 1852, when Union County was created from parts of Middlesex and Hunterdon counties, South Plainfield became one of its seven townships within Union County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township had a total population of 11,824 at the 2000 census; however, this number has since decreased due to mergers with other municipalities withinUnionCounty over the past few decades. On November 6th 2007 Mayor James Novak announced plans for a new shopping center which will be called "The Commons" located off Route 23 just outside town limits on Spring Lake Road/Route 9062 (which leads directly into Center Township). The project will include 2 million square feet (120 hectares) of retail space including two large department stores - Macy's and JCPenney - as well as 100 restaurants and bars across 10 different brands including Applebee's®, Champs Sports Club®, Starbucks®, KFC®, Subway*, Burger King®*. This will be Union county's largest shopping center ever built!
South Plainfield was once one of the most prosperous towns in New Jersey. The area had a large slave trade and its economy depended on farming, manufacturing, and commerce. The town was destroyed by fire in 1874 and again by arson in 1896. However, South Plainfield's history is still remembered through its namesake town square, which is located at the intersection of Route 22 and Route 8.
