Alamogordo, New Mexico is a small town located in the northeastern corner of the US state of New Mexico. As of the 2010 census, its population was 2,711. The Alamogordo Historic District is a National Register of Historic Places listings area. The first European to visit what is now Alamogordo was Spanish exploration and mapping expedition led by Juan de Porfirio de Valdivia in 1540. It was not until 1765 that Mexican War veteran José Joaquin Cárdenasverified that an important river system ran through present-day Alamogordo and El Paso County. In 1864, General Antonio José MontoyacarteredigitulescontainingthelocationofAlamogordo for future Mexicans who were about to invade from Texas during the American Civil War. In 1881, prospector John Wesley Powell discovered gold along the Pecos River in present day Santa Fe County while exploring for new goldfields in western New Mexico Territory. On July 6, 1885, US Army Colonel George Armstrong Custer discovered and named Devils Lake after his encounter with Sioux Chief Crazy Horse on July 3 at nearby White Cloud Gulch (now Clearwater Gulch). As part of today's Alamogordo Historic District, portions of Devils Lake are also included within the boundaries of the city limits as well as adjacent White Cloud Gulch Preserve managed by NM Parks & Wildlife Department. In 1911 local builder James Fenton started construction on what would later become Alamo Plaza Shopping Center which became one of America's largest shopping malls when it opened in 1978 at what is now Main Street and South Boulevard in downtown Alamo Plaza. The mall anchored by Sears followed suit several years later with JCPenney locating a store there in 1997 before Macy's closed its doors permanently downtown in 2006 following more than 20 years open operation statewide including 5 years inside Alamo Plaza itself! Today much like many other Midwestern towns throughout history%, Alamogordo has experienced significant loss due to various natural disasters such as earthquakes (2011), floods (2013), wildfires (2015) and most recently hurricanes Harvey/ Irma (2017). However despite these challenges numerous businesses have continued to thrive including two medical clinics providing care for individuals with various health issues being located just across from each other on north Main Street; 25th century convenience store G&G Market which has been open since 1969; post office which opened its doors again after renovations starting fall 2017; hotel IHOP whose original building reopened Fall 2017 vacant following Irma’s landfall; artesian well oil production facility operated by Plains Alluvial Aquifer Associates LLC off Old Highway 66 south of town Mallards Point - home to over 100 wells producing up to 8 million barrels per day - operations restarted2018 after lengthy shutdown caused by storm damage; power plant generating electricity for community needs still ongoing even though capacity utilization below 75% due to lack thereof during recent storms

Alamogordo was founded in 1874 by wagon train settlers, who named the site for Mount San Antonio. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two major trails, and by 1907 Alamogordo had a population of over 2,000. The era of railroad development in New Mexico brought increased traffic and development to Alamogordo, which led to an increase in the number of businesses and pedestrians on Main Street. In 1916, Alamogordo erupted into violence when a group of local businessmen attempted to establish their own school system. After several years of fighting, the merchants prevailed and the new school system was established in 1920. By 1930 Alamogordo had reached its peak as a commercial center with a population of over 10,000. However, during World War II the town experienced significant economic decline due to its proximity to Albuquerque and Texas City. following the war Alamogordo experienced rapid growth again as a result of post-war prosperity thanks to federal funding for infrastructure projects such as Interstate 15 and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. However, by 1970 Alamogordonians were beginning to experience increasing social unrest which culminated in a series of massacres that year. In 1971 Pomona College students invaded Alamo Hall - one night after disagreements about class assignments - resulting in three days of riots that left more than 100 people dead across town
