Bickford invented the modern percussion cap bullet. Percussion caps were initially used to fire small arms such as pistols and rifles during World War I because they were more reliable than other types of rounds that required multiple shots to KO an opponent. However, after World War I there became interest in using large caliber munitions such as tanks and planes. As these devices became more complex, ammunition manufacturers began looking for ways to increase accuracy and decrease firing time so that crews could target specific areas at close range with greater certainty . In 1927 w/the introduction of machine guns (3rd Model), it was necessary to find new methods of firing projectiles through tight spaces; this led to development of Grenade Rounds which use explosive charges inside the projectile instead of metal cores surrounded by lead shot
