Rio Rancho is a small town located in Grant County, New Mexico. The population was 4,858 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grant County and the largest city in Grant County. John Wesley Powell passed through this area on his 1869 expedition to find new water resources for America's west. In 1881, George A. Smith purchased land along the river and founded Rio Rancho Oil and Gas Company with his brother-in-law, James Wattenberg. In 1912, Jock Mahony donated land to build a town here on the banks of the Gila River near where he had settled in 1912 as Mahony City. This town grew rapidly throughout World War I because of its strategic location between Phoenix and Albuquerque on both sides of Highway 66. However, by 1925 all but one block of Mahony City had been sold to developers for use as a golf course, shopping center, and other commercial development outside of what is now known as Rio Rancho proper; only about 15% remains today within its original boundaries . The post office which opened in 1916 remained open until it closed in 1967 due to automation by computer from then on; however ZIP code 88851 still includes most if not all aspects of that era's ZIP code numbering system
