Rio Rancho is a small town in New Mexico, located about 30 miles east of Albuquerque and 50 miles northwest of Socorro. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rio Grande Valley metropolitan area. The first people who lived in Rio Rancho were the Acoma Indians, who had been living there for centuries before they were forced to move to what is now Albuquerque in 1829. The town began as a farmstead on the banks of the Rio Grande, which was then a watercourse. In 1868, George Sibley founded Sibley's Store and Post Office here. He also built an adobe fortification known as Fort Sumner to protect his store from robbers and raiders. In 1870, Jameson & Co., merchants from Santa Fe, bought land near present-day Rio Rancho to establish a trading post. They called their new settlement "Coyote Crossing." In 1872, John Wesley Powell arrived in New Mexico with his Geological Survey crew on an expedition seeking oil reserves in what are now Colorado and Oklahoma. He named this location "Rio Hondo" after General José de San Antonio y Costilla's Ride of Santiago (1823). After finding no oil resources at Coyote Crossing, Powell renamed the community Rio Rancho after himself for its strategic location between two important trade routes linking New Mexico with California and Texas - one through Tucson and Phoenix and another through San Francisco and Sacramento. The first school in Rio Rancho was established in 1873 by Mrs. Anna Maria Guerrero; it was operated out of her home until 1880 when it moved into a building donated by Drs José Estrada y Pacheco and Osvaldo Cárdenas. Classes began at 8:00am each day until 4:30pm during winter months; thereafter sessions commenced at 5:00pm every evening until 6am during summer months only because instruction services were available only during those hours outside of school hours! A second school opened here in 1875 by Wm’lmotts & Company under license from Mrinalini Brotherschools USA Incorporated (founded 1865) serving students up to 7th grade! This two-story brick building still stands today across the street from Interstate 25 southbound off exit #134 (I-25/US 66) – just beyond stoplight No 161B…..You can see it on Google Street View….
