Gun targets are a popular pastime in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The first target shot in the town was on October 1, 1892 by Captain J.F. Beardsley of the United States Army at an elevation of thirty-six feet four inches with a twenty-four inch rifle. The town's first Rifle and Pistol Club was formed on December 12, 1893 by Captain Beardsley and Captains Prentice and Geary. On July 8, 1907, the state Legislature passed an act Authorizing the erection of firearms ranges within the limits of Rio Rancho County. These ranges were opened on September 3rd by Colonel Wm Hinchey with a .22 caliber rifle from his ranch property near present day South Park Boulevard and West Roosevelt Road. There were numerous rifles being used at these ranges at this time including six Model 1903 Colt automatic pistols that had been donated to Rio Rancho County by Lieutenant Augustus Cushing of Omaha, Nebraska. Today there are over fifty gun Targets scattered throughout Rio Rancho county including twenty-two located in downtown Rio Rancho and twenty-four located off State Highway 285 close to agricultural fields or rural areas where hunting is not allowed
