In 1827, José Arce y Vidaurre attempted to establish a Mexican military post at Fort Union on the east side of Pecos River; however, this post was abandoned within months because it was not able to withstand American attack during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). A new fortifications became necessary after American forces burned down part of old Presidios San Felipe de Albuquerque in 1849 due to lack of funding for their construction project. At that time there were only nine settlements in present-day SantaFe County: Alamogordo proper (then known as Adobe Walls), Arequipa junction (now called Human Resources Center), Baca Junction (now known as Business Park East), Bernalillo Junction (now known as West Plaza Shopping Center), Chinle Junction (now called North Plaza Shopping Center), Cottonwood Junction (now called Central Plaza Shopping Center), El Paso Junction (now known as South plaza shopping center) and Grants Pass Junction (later renamed Ranger Station). In 1861 when Governor Manuel Micheltorena moved his capital from Tucson to SantaFe following his victory over Arizona Republic fighters at Palo Alto Hill outside Tucson on October 14th that year,[2] he ordered all federal agencies with posts or branches located within 1 mi radius westward along Rio Grande have their buildings relocated into central square which would become governor’s office complex with gymnasium/library/cafeteria/conference room/entertainment hall etc., north side current Federal Building south side Mayo building where today United States Post Office is located

The town of Santa Fe was founded by the Pueblo of Taos in 1540. The area that is now Santa Fe was then called the Doña Ana Plateau. In 1847, a group of wealthy Spanish aristocrats founded the city of Albuquerque on the site of what is now downtown Albuquerque. By 1830, Santa Fe had over 1,000 residents and was one of the largest towns in New Mexico. However, during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Santa Fe came under attack from Confederate forces and quickly surrendered. Afterward, many residents emigrated to northern Mexico or other parts of America. In 1928,Santa Fe became an incorporated town with a population of around 25,000 people. The following year saw another milestone when it became one of only two cities in New Mexico to be granted water rights by Congress. In 1951,New Mexico Statehood was passed and SantaFe subsequently gained its own seat in the state legislature along with Winslow City in Arizona

On December 25, 1847, the first train arrived in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was a wagon train of emigrants from Oregon. The town was founded by Don José Antonio Armijo and his wife María de la Luz y Ortiz. The first post office in Santa Fe was established in 1848. The town quickly became a center for trade and transportation between Santa Fe and the Southwest United States. In 1861, New Mexico joined the Union as a state. Santa Fe continued to grow as an important commercial and cultural center during the Mexican American War (1846-1848).
