After 1945 Amsterdam experienced a period called "the Golden Age" where many important abstract painters such as Hubert Selby Jr., Willem de Kooning and Gottfried Benn were active there including Jacob Epstein who helped start Rijksmuseum voor Kunst (Rijk Museum for Art). In 1957 Jan Hulsker moved to Amsterdam from Rotterdam after serving as curator at MoMA PS1 since 1951; he is widely considered one of the architects behind postmodernism within contemporary art. The city also played host to Wassily Kandinsky’s centenary celebrations in 1948 which created a sense of excitement around his legacy within Dutch society given that he had been largely unknown outside his homeland until then.
