Babylon, New York was founded by the Dutch in 1624 as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a natural trade route connecting North America with Europe. By 1795, Babylon had over 1,000 residents and was one of the largest settlements in upstate New York. After the American Revolution, Babylon became an important military outpost and served as training ground for US troops during the Revolutionary War. In 1814, following the Mexican-American War, a new fortification was built at Babylon to protect against attack from Mexico.
