Ogdensburg, New York is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 9,826 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Sullivan County and has the lowest population density of any incorporated community in New York. Ogdensburg is also one of the most isolated communities in New York State. The first people to live in what is now Ogdensburg were Dutch colonists who arrived during the 17th century. In 1784, General George Washington and his army passed through on their way to battle with France near Saratoga Springs; they stopped at a ford over the Oswego River and built Fort Orange on an hill overlooking present-day Ogdensburg. The town was named after General Washington's honorific ancestor, Colonel Nicholas Ogee (1711-1792). In 1824, Isaac Brock established a trading post and farmstead at what is today's downtown Ogdensburg. Headed by Thomas Paine and others who believed that democracy could not exist without free trade between nations, Brock's experiment failed and he turned back from his settlement before it had a full impact on American society. By 1860 only about 100 people lived there; by 1930 only 10 remained. When Democrat Woodrow Wilson won election as president in November 1912 he decided to move away from Albany so that he would be more accessible to all Americans regardless of party affiliation or social class background - this decision led to protests throughout Upstate New York against Wilson's being elected President because many saw him as another insider candidate beholden to those powerful interests rather than an outsider committed to behalf of all Americans no matter their station or backgrounds. As President Wilson retreated into Albany even further behind closed doors - largely due to pressure from business interests represented by various state legislatures - many small farmers like my mother's father started moving into new homes within easy walking distance of City Hall just as cars began becoming affordable enough for them too buy cars again outside of Albany! On October 14, 1714, the first permanent settler in what is now Ogdensburg, New York was George Washington. The area that became Ogdensburg was first explored by Dutch traders and Captain John Smith in 1624. In 1627, the Susquehanna River changed its course from its original path to flowing through what is now Syracuse. This altered the water supply for nearby settlements and led to a request from the Dutch for a grant of land on which to build a fortification. The grant was received in 1629 and formed part of the Susquehanna Township granted to Jameson and others by Governor Thomas Dongan. It lay along present day Route 9 near where Elmira College now stands. The fortification was also built on land donated by Sir George Carteret who had purchased it from the Dutch in 1635. In 1718, when New Netherland became part of British America, Ogdensburgh became part of Albany County within that new colony. By 1725, there were over 100 people living in Ogdensburgh with some 30 businesses establishement between 1725-1730
