The first settler in Oneida was Nicholas Cushing who arrived in 1784. In 1814, Daniel DeWitt purchased land east of Oneida and laid out a town site that he named after his wife, Anna Maria de Witt. During the American Civil War, General John J. Pershing's troops passed through Oneida on their way to Rochester where they destroyed many homes and killed many people. After the war ended, Oneida grew slowly until it became an all-black community due to white flight during Reconstruction. Oneida, New York is a small town in upstate New York, located on the east side of the Adirondacks. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Oneida was first settled by Germans in 1795 and became part of Albany County. In 1814, it became part of Montgomery County. In 1830, it merged with Ontario County to form Oneida County. The early settlers were farmers and their families who grew corn, beans, potatoes and other vegetables for local consumption orexport to other parts of the United States. The first church in Oneida was built in 1795 by German pastors from Hamburg-Bremen and Potsdam. Baptisms began taking place there soon after. In 1814, when Albany and Montgomery counties were combined into new Albany Territory under the authority of the U.S Congress as part of efforts to resettle Eastern European immigrants on American soil following the War for Independence (1812-15), Oneida Township was included within that territory along with five other townships: Berlin (now Bethlehem), Clearwater (now Canandaigua), Elmira (now Elmont), Ithaca (now Ithaca Falls) and North Tonawanda (now Seneca). Oneida’s earliest residents did not directly engage in agriculture but worked as mechanics or teachers in nearby towns such as Auburn or Oswego before coming to live here themselves during the 1830s when one mile per day paved road made transportation much easier than it had been before. They also brought over their own horses and carts which they used to bring goods upriver from Schenectady until railroads arrived in this area about 1840; then all goods had to be shipped downriver again! A post office was established at Oneidaon July 3rd 1800 by John Harper with mail delivered once a week from Auburn; however this service ceased operations on October 15th 1800 due to an act of Congress making it prohibitively expensive for small towns like Oneida to have their own postal service! From this point forward mail deliveries were done through NY Postmaster General Nathaniel Greene’s office at Albany! The first store opened here around 1825 by C A Fenton & Sons under license from Peter Cooper & Co., whose original store located near present day Clinton Avenue served as a model for many subsequent stores built throughout what would become known as “The Townships” including those now within City limits: Berlin/Elmira/Ithaca/Seneca Falls etc.. At least two churches were built between 1827-29 by Presbyterians led by Rev Solomon Henson – one now standing on Clinton Avenue opposite Fenton’s Store while another is still standing inside City Limits LINCOLN AVENUE BETWEEN ELMIRA FOREST RD AND CANADIAN AVENUE ————————————————- Original building date unknown but likely erected c 1830 google map
