Oneida is a small town in the Catskills, New York, United States. It is located in Sullivan County on the border of Albany and Onondaga counties. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Oneida's gun barrel history can be traced back to 1824 when it was part of the Unadilla Township in Onondaga County. At that time, there were no guns and ammunition allowed within township boundaries. In order to provide immunity from local taxes, residents of Unadilla had to import their firearms from Connecticut or Massachusetts. The firstguns manufactured here were two rifles made by John Cushing and Samuel Morse in 1828. In 1875, Oneida became one of five townships included in the newly formed Genesee Valley municipality which merged with Syracuse into an all-new city called Syracuse University. Oneida, New York is a small village located in the town of Oneida on the southern tip of Lake Ontario. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of theNiagara Falls–Fallsburgh, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Oneida occurs in 1602 when Daniel Webster wrote: "There are a few villages in this river, called Onondaga and Oneidas ["sic"], about twelve miles from us." In 1724-25 James Watt explored the area and noted that there were no permanent settlements in or near Oneida Creek but he thought it might be possible to Fortify it with some artillery. In 1790 John Graves Simcoe visited Oneida and found that there were two houses standing but very little else. He pronounced it an unproductive place without any means of support or defense whatsoever. However, after his visit one man built himself a small cabin on an old mill dam which he named Fort Niagara; other early settlers also constructed small cabins hereabouts. In 1814 Alexander McNaught planted potatoes at what is now known as Point McNaught and began trading with local farmers for goods such as flour and butter. This started up a trade which would continue until large mills were established along the Niagara River around 1830s glassmaking became an important industry beginning with Millard Fillmore's operation in 1840s followed by others including Buffalo Electric Light Company (1892) and Niagara Mohawk Power Company (1916). By 1853 all farming had ceased except for raising chickens for eggs and sugarcane had become major crops exported to markets like New York City where molasses was made from sugarcane juice for candy production. A post office was established at Point McNaught in 1857; by 1870 only 7 families still lived there within sight of the post office while most residents now worked outside their homes on farms or through businesses like McKessack's Mills Ltd., set up by James McKessack after his purchase of land east of Oneida Creek from Canadian farmer David Dixon in 1865; however dairy products continued to be produced until 1964 when all factory jobs moved out to nearby Buffalo while aluminum production took over due to new technology developing at Maschinee Aluminumsmithery plant across Drummond Street Eventually only natural wood remains standing today as buildings have been demolished during development projects including power lines running through them since they are too tall!
