Wanamaker's store helped create a demand for goods produced outside of New England which contributed to economic growth in Oneida throughout much of the 19th century. It wasn't until after World War II that shopping malls started popping up all over rural America thanks to Interstate 95 which made it easier for people to get around without having to venture out into town squareways or down alleyways

Oneida, New York is a small town in upstate New York that was the seat of Cadmus County from 1821 to 1827 and then again from 1828 to 1832. The town was named after Oneida Lake, which was located about five miles east of the present-day town. Oneida is located on the west bank of the Hudson River, east of Kingston and west of Scranton. The first permanent settler in Oneida was Nicholas Cohoes, who arrived in 1796. In 1800 John French and his brother Isaac founded Clinton near Oneida Lake. In 1821 Cadmus County was formed from portions of Albany, Hamilton and Westchester Counties with Oneida as its capital. Cadmus County lost territory when it was combined with Wyoming County in 1830. In 1832 Oneida became part of Erie County when that county was created from parts of Warren and Lackawanna Counties. During the American Civil War (1861-1865) Oneida served as a military garrison for Fort Niagara on the western shore of Oneida Lake. On July 15, 1865, during the battle for Gettysburg one hundred soldiers from 1st Regiment NY Volunteer Infantry died at one point when they were ordered by their colonel to storm an impregnable Confederate battery positioned around Cemetery Hill without orders or knowledge that it would lead to heavy casualties among them
