It was founded on October 16, 1875 by soldiers from the 1st New York Infantry Regiment who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The first rifles were purchased from local farmers. The first pistols were purchased from local merchants. The original clubhouse was located at 209 East Main Street in Oneida, New York. It was later moved to its current location at 8 Sheridan Road in Oneida, New York, which served as its base until 1914. Oneida Rifle and Pistol Club has been active ever since it was founded and has participated in various shooting activities both indoor and outdoor including Trap & Skeet, Sporting Clays, IPSC matches, Gunsmoke Meetings and more!
Oneida is a town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. It is located on the border of Otsego County and Tioga County, east of the village of Oneida Falls. The population was 10,554 as of the 2010 census. The name "Oneida" comes from an Iroquois word meaning "place where the water flows clear." Oneida falls into two parts: Oneida Lake and Oneida Creek. The first settler in what became Oneida was George Herrick, who arrived in 1786. He built a log cabin on the site that is now known as Herrick's Hall. In 1802, John Jacob Astor bought land at one end of Herrick's Cabin and named it Astor Manor after his uncle, Jacob Astor IV. In 1813, under pressure from Native Americans to sell more land for development, Solomon Northup donated eight acres (3 ha) at the south end of Herrick's Cabin to become Northup Heights. In 1827, James Clinton purchased additional land from Northup Heights for $10 per acre (0.48Ha). This land became known as Clinton Hill because it lay between Oneida Lake and Clinton Hill Road which later became part of Middle Country Road. When New York State acquired title to all property west of Mohawk River in 1837, including most present-day Oneidasville and East Syracuse, its agents called this area White Plains Township because so much white settlement had taken place there since Canada had gained possession over this territory in 1784 during their Seven Years' War with England. The first town meeting was held on April 3rd 1830 in Whiteshall Tavern by Revs Nicholas Biddle et al., when they voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Ontario". On October 14th 1830 election results showed that 1/2 majority residents supported incorporation but no action was taken; however Mayor Nicholas Biddle resigned due to health concerns soon afterwards so a new mayor could be chosen by secret ballot without his knowledge or consent: Elijah Howe Jr.. On December 15th 1830 Ontario declared itself open for general elections with Howe being elected supervisor electioneer with 71% of ballots cast having him win over Augustus Kelley who polled only 24%. Howe served until he left office due to ill health in 1865 then resumed his duties as town clerk until 1870 when he died suddenly at age 72 years old; leaving one year short of six terms as Supervisor! On February 25th 1870 Anthony Jukes obtained an act from New York state legislature authorising formation within White Plains Township (now Oneidasville)of a Village Committee consisting Of Five Men To Serve For A Term Of Three Years And Should Remove Anybody Who Hath Not Demonstrated Interest In Settling There...This committee managed affairs until October 2nd 1880 when first Selectman Averell Harriman took office…On November 3rd 1880 selectmen Isaac Noyes et al were also appointed members…Harriman resigned effective date January 25th 1881 due to illness before being succeeded by Nathan Sibley effective date February 5th 1881…. After Harriman’s resignation selectmen Cushman Hubbard et al continued management until May 1886…. Oneida, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Oneida's name means " fruitful ground ". The town was first settled in 1785 by Loyalist refugees from the American Revolutionary War and their families. In 1815 Oneida became part of the Erie Canal Zone. In 1827 it incorporated as a village. It had a population of 553 in 1850 and 1,017 in 1870. Its main businesses were agriculture and local manufacturing; but during World War II Oneida played an important role as one of two rail stop points on the southern line of the New York Central Railroad (NYCRA). In 1951 Oneida became an exclave of Chenango County when its eastern border with Otsego County was changed to follow that county's then-current line eastward to Rome. As part of Essex County's consolidation into the new state of New York in 1955, Oneida became defunct within that county limits. However, within newly created Sullivan County one side (the east) of its former Township Line formed part of Norwich/Easton which retained its own government until 1961 The Main Street Bridge over Seneca Creek forms a key link between Oneida and Rome, both towns having been founded on waterways connecting those two areas before railroad travel became common after the opening of Pennsylvania Avenue in 1865 allowed for easy commuting between Washington D.C., Baltimore and Buffalo A post office was established at Oneida in 1828 and continued serving until 1907; it replaced an earlier grant from Albany
