Oneida, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. It is located on the eastern edge of Oneida County and is bordered by Seneca to the north, Oswego to the east, and Monroe County to the south. The population was 523 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to come to Oneida were Dutch traders and colonists who arrived in 1624. The earliest permanent settler was Nicholas Doherty, who built a farm on what is now State Route 34 in 1793. In 1814, Daniel Webster became US Senator from New York and moved his family to Oneida for safety during the War of 1812. Heeded by other senators as a symbol of states’ rights, Webster refused to ratify a peace treaty negotiated by General Anthony Wayne that ended that war. In 1827 Partridge Dickson founded what would become Oneida Institute—the first institution of higher education west of Pennsylvania—in present-day Seneca Falls. That same year also saw construction begin on what would be called today's College Hill campus; it opened in 1830 with twelve students enrolled. A fire destroyed much of existing campus in 1886 but re-opened two years later with more than doubled enrollment thanks largely to an donation from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. By 1900 Oneida had more than 1,600 residents and had earned its nickname "The Birthplace of American Education." However, World War II interrupted many Ofeings' plans for growth: after all, one-seventh of all college graduates went into military service between 1941 and 1945 (more than any other state). However, when peacetime returned in 1946 there was fresh impetus for expansion: among others University President James Boren donated land near downtown for a new medical school which opened in 1948; then came an extension of Central Union High School (now part of Marist College), which opened in 1951; finally came the erection of Three Bridges High School (now part of SUNY Cortland) in 1957 – making Oneida one large high school with several schools serving multiple campuses across town – followed by Elmira Senior High School (now part of Mohawk Valley Community Colleges) and finally Central Union Junior/Senior High School (now known as John F Kennedy MiddleSchool). "Today," writes historian James Meehan about Oneida's post-war renaissance, "one can walk anywhere one wants within walking distance... There are no streetlights or stop signals... Everything feels random." In fact some feel this spontaneous quality has made Oneida something like an "isolated utopia"—a place where people take their beliefs seriously enough not see need for government regulation or infrastructure investment even though outside forces constantly urge otherwise! Oneida is a small town in upstate New York, located on the eastern border of the Finger Lakes region. Its population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Oneida is one of the oldest towns in Upstate New York and has been inhabited by the Oneidas since 1637. The first European to visit Oneida was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who named it for his hometown of Vicenza, Italy. The first permanent settler in Oneida was Nicholas Biddle, who arrived in 1795 and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. The town developed rapidly after it became part of Albany County in 1809. In 1830, General James Van Rensselaer granted land to settlers near what is now Syracuse University; this area became known as "Van Rensselaerown". In 1831-32, Oneida voted to annex from neighboring Aurora Township; this annexation created Oneida Park and laid out its present boundaries. In 1861-62, during the American Civil War, Union soldiers burned down two small buildings used as stores by Confederate forces; these actions helped spur development around South Ferry Road and White Plains Road. After the war ended, many farmers moved into Oneida from surrounding counties; between 1870 and 1880, population growth averaged 2%. The village of Northville was founded nearby in 1892 but quickly merged into Oneida Village. In 1907-08 local school board Member Anna Larkin organized a drive to collect enough money to build a new school for the village; this effort led to construction of Northside School (now Niagara Falls High School) on White Plains Road in 1908. This kindergarten/grade school served students from grades PreK through 8 until 1913 when they were consolidated with Niagara Falls Jr./SrHigh School (now Canandaigua Central High School). As enrollment increased and more people started moving into Oneida Village, businesses began opening up along South Ferry Road: First National Bank opened up in 1911 and John Ahern's hardware store followed soon afterwards. By 1925 there were six businesses open along that stretch of road: four grocery stores (Flamingo Japanese restaurant & gift shop being one), two banks (First National & John Ahern), three insurance companies (Plymouth Mutual Life Insurance Company & Erie Life Insurance Company) and two post offices (OneIDA Post Office #1 & TwoIDA Post Office #2). For most residents living close to their work or homes options grew scarce or too expensive so various collective efforts such as purchasing food stamps or setting up informal gardens began growing among villagers early adopters such as Mr., Mrs., Sister etc.; later formal gardens became popularized with large donations from individuals like Mrs Lynda Jaffe late 1990s onwards community garden project which also included seating areas for visitors
Oneida, New York was founded by the Mohawk tribe in 1772. The community grew quickly, and soon had a school, church and jail. In 1814, Oneida became a state capital.
