Kannapolis is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, the population was 362, up from 291 at the 2000 census. The town was founded in 1827 by Colonel John Todd Johnston and his family. Kannapolis is home to eastern Randolph County and parts of western Buncombe County. The first permanent settler in what would become Kannapolis was Captain John Atwater in 1785. He built a cabin on high ground called "Atwater's Hill" near present-day downtown Kannapolis. One hundred years later, General James Fayette established himself there as commander of British forces stationed at Fort Moultrie on Pee Dee Island during the American Revolutionary War. In 1798, Kannapolis became part of Johnston's new state of North Carolina from portions of South Carolina that had voted to secede from that state. In 1827, Colonel John Todd Johnston moved his family to what would become Kannapolis from nearby Rocky Mount because he saw an opportunity for a new community within reach of Raleigh with access to trains and other amenities that could only be found in larger cities like Charlotte or Durham. Colonel Johnston named his new town after him, making it one of the first places in America to bear his name (the others being Hartford Connecticut). The town grew rapidly due to its location near railroad lines and its easy access to markets both inside and outside of Raleigh; approximately 60% of all goods imported into North Carolina through Raleigh arrived here before 1880. By 1840, almost all citizens were Methodists; however, Baptist missionaries began arriving soon thereafter and religious diversity expanded rapidly into the community until eventually all denominational Protestant churches united as Seventh-day Adventist Church members in 1865 – becoming known as "Kannapolis". During Reconstruction following the Civil War, many African Americans were brought here as slaves who worked on local plantations; this practice continued until white farmers turned their properties over to blacks following Reconstruction (1877–1912). black residents formed their own business district along High Street which still exists today - "The District" - while white people continued living elsewhere within the city limits. While much has changed since then – including most notably increased crime rates – aspects such as downtown streetscape remain unchanged throughout much of contiguous Randolph County which lies just north Stokesville/west coal mine townsite area where mines closed down during economic recession several years ago but are still visible atop hills overlooking downtown areas currently undergoing redevelopment complete since early 2014 Aldermanic districts have been created around downtown area Downtown teaming with various development projects including arts & entertainment venues church complexes office buildings housing developments retail spaces restaurants

After two years of turmoil, Kannapolis emerged victorious as the capital of North Carolina in 1824. It remained that way until 1865, when Raleigh replaced Kannapolis as the state capital. Today, Kannapolis is a thriving community known for its arts and culture, its schools and businesses, and its vibrant nightlife.

Johnson, who had fought at the Battle of Saratoga and participated in the signing of the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War. In 1865, Kannapolis became part of the Confederate States of America following the war. The town was abandoned following the surrender of Confederate forces in 1865, and it has been vacant since then.
