After Mobile fell to Union troops in 1865, General Woodruff returned to lead his regiment here until his death in 1881. In 1887, John Waddell erected one of the first commercial buildings in Kernersville when he opened what became known as Waddells Drug Store & Grain Mill. In 1908, Daughters of The American Revolution formed an agricultural society here and began growing crops for local markets. In 1935-1936, Kernersville hosted its first farmers’ market open to the public with proceeds going back into charity. Today there are more than 50 farmers’ markets throughout North Carolina operated by more than 100 organizations specializing in food production and salesmanship from small family farms down to large grocery stores.

Kernersville is located on the eastern border of Durham County and is bordered by Interstate 85 to the south. It lies near Chapel Hill and Raleigh. The first permanent settler in Kernersville was James Kneeland who arrived in 1792. He named his place after his brother-in-law Colonel John Kirkeland of Rhode Island, who had come to America with him and married Kneeland's sister. In 1811 wagonloads of settlers arrived from Georgia and Virginia, led by Daniel Boone and William Tryon; these were followed by others over the next several years. A store opened in 1815 alongpresent day US Highway 421 which served as a key trade center for the area until it was destroyed by a fire in 1824. In 1837 entrepreneur Jeptha Burch bought 5,000 acres (20 km²) of land east of present day Kernersville from Sir John Moore for $4,000 cash; this included 2 miles (3 km) of what is now I-85/US 421 junction. Burch started building roads and began developing his new town which he named after himself: Jeptha Burchtown or Jacksonville Beach on "the water's edge". The town rapidly grew due to its economic importance as a transportation hub for goods moving between Durham County and other parts of North Carolina Burch died in 1840; but his townsite would continue to grow until it reached its current size. Today part of downtown Kernersville is still called "Jeptha Burchtown" while most surrounding areas are either renamed after people or places associated with their lives such as courthouse square or Burchs Landing Park Preserve where they built their homeboatyard complex known as Jeptha Bay Club House Museum Harbor Winds Resort & Marina). This growth pattern can be seen throughout much ofDurhamCounty during this time period when many small towns sprung up all around counties like Wakefield (1914), Henderson (1920), Orangeburg(1924), Cary(1928), Rocky Mount(1932) etc., creating commuting complexes that supported larger cities economies – something that continues today with major metropolitan areas like CharlotteAdding insult to injury, road construction projects often caused extensive damage to small communities during times when heavy rainfall was expected making them very vulnerable to flooding later on – a problem which has become more common due to global warming given how rain inundates low lying coastal communities even more frequently! After the war there were large waves of Korean immigrants arriving so suddenlyurban sprawl really took off beginning with massive residential subdivisions close enough together for cars shopping malls became necessary resulting in increased traffic congestion problems once again becoming increasingly difficult to solve without eliminating entire neighborhoods entirely! A comprehensive plan submitted back in 1955 proposed completely restructuring arterial travel through central Durham county including removal/replacement of certain routes & installation Of Interstates 275 & 277 connecting Chapel Hill with Raleigh (& eventually South Carolina) - yet no action occurred until 1990 following Chairs death.. Although initial reviews found little Benefit compared To Other Plans Proposed At That Time highway maintenance budgets became overwhelmed with increasing traffic levels coupled With rising costs associated With freeway widening efforts !!!! This prompted Anderell Group Incorporated CEO John Aderholt To Take Action… precisely What Would Happen If No One Wrote Anything !?!?!!??!) As You Can Imagine There Was intense Debate Over Whether Or Not To demolish Old Roads Which Changed alot Of History !!!!! However ultimately It Ended Up Being Done As We Know It Today…) So Many People Have Connected Their Lives To This Place Through Memories OR They've Inherited Them From Their Parents OR Friends WHICH MAKES THE MEMORIES VERY SPECIAL….
