On December 15th 1902 citizens voted to name their new town after General Robert Ewell Montero (1824-1915), Confederate general during the American Civil War who served under General Johnston and Major General Beauregard at Gettysburg - this became known as "Ewell's Town" or simply "Montero." The growth of downtown Monroe led to violence beginning around 1938 when merchants started boycotting local manufacturers for price hikes caused by World War II supply shortages: prices continued to increase even after production quotas were set by the government; eventually these boycotts reached such proportions that many small businesses closed down completely or went out of business altogether due to lack of customers or competition from larger stores which could afford to purchase more expensive goods produced within our community withoutBoycotting them). On October 6th 1978 Mayor Hargrave ceded power to then City Councilmember Donnie Fletcher after eight years atop City Hall following county-wide elections which he won handily becoming Durham's first African American mayor ever while serving concurrently as both Mayor and Councilmember; Fletcher would later become re-elected twice before running unsuccessfully for Governor against Roy Cooper in 2018 despite having nearly two million votes cast against him!
