In 1911- 1912 an tornado struck central North Carolina killing eleven people and injuring over seventy-five; this made[s] Monroeville one of the most damage hit communities during that time period according to insurance records kept at Duke University's Center for Research on Disaster Studies (CRDS). The storm also caused significant damage to homes across town including one house which completely destroyed its foundation; this event has been called "the first major tornado outbreak in north Carolina."
