It is located on the border of Durham and Chapel Hill counties, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) northeast of Raleigh and 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of the larger city of Winston-Salem. The population was 6,373 at the 2010 census. Mooresville's early history can be traced back to 1795 when two British soldiers were found dead along the road from Newcastle to Mooresville. Local residents quickly named this location "Henderson's Ferry" after Major General George Henderson who had conquered that region during the American Revolution. Henderson's Ferry would later become part of Durham, known for its textile mills which operated until World War II. In 1821, David Dennison purchased land in what is now Mooresville from Colonel Nathaniel Harnett for $2,500 cash. This purchase marked the beginning of Mooresville as a town governed by a select committee appointed by governor John Sevier with power to make all decisions necessary for its welfare including taxation, education and fire protection ordinances. Dennison built his home on this land and developed it into one of North Carolina's leading cotton plantations. The first schools inMooresville were established in 1836 by Reverend James Smith with six students in a small log cabin on Church Hill Road which served as his schoolhouse until 1840 when he moved to a large brick structure on Trade Street which still stands today as an important local landmark used by millions of people each year since its construction over 60 years ago! In 1851 Drury became moored off shore at present day US 19 just east of downtown MooresVILLE while moored outsystems provided fresh water and sewerage service; both systems are still operational today!
