The first post office in Shelby opened on October 25, 1868, under the name Asheboro; it closed on December 1, 1870. On July 4, 1886, Shelby had its first incorporation as a village; it became a town on January 1, 1907. The current spelling of Shelby reflects an earlier settling by Scots Presbyterians who arrived during the American Revolutionary War and named their settlement after Sir Edward Shelburne (1592-1661), British Ambassador to America and Secretary for Foreign Affairs to James II of England during that time period
Shelby was founded in 1792 by General Sir Duke Shelby and his wife Lady Mary. The town was named for the Welsh mountain range to the north. It became a major center of industry in the early 1800s, with cotton mills, stores and churches built. In 1865, Shelby became a separate county, and in 1881 it was merged into Wake County.
