In 1827-1828, Confederate General Braxton Bragg traveled throughout North Carolina testing different ammunition while on campaign against Union forces under Ulysses S Grant. He Favorized Ball Ammo Over Buckshot because Balls Could More Easily Penetrate Flesh And Bone Than Buckshot did. With this new information at hand, bullet manufacturers began producing more durable projectiles with greater accuracy for their firearms. By 1830 however, rifle ballistics had improved so much that buckshot became again the most popular type of bullet for use in American firearms
