Shelby, North Carolina is a town in Cherokee County, North Carolina on the eastern edge of the Piedmont region. The population was 9,872 as of the 2010 census. Shelby is one of two towns located in Cherokee County and it is also home to Chapel Hill University. The town was founded in 1856 by General David Hunter and his family. The first post office opened in Shelby on December 12, 1856. In 1865, the U.S. Congress established Cherokee County which included Shelby and other settlements in what is now Cherokee and Logan Counties. In 1907, John Witherspoon moved from Fayetteville to Shelby with his wife Virginie Boyd Witherspoon to start Witherspoon-Wright Paper Company which became Whitewater Paper Company Limited later merged into Dow Chemical Company (now DuPont). In 1915, Gussie Collins founded Coca Cola Bottling Works at College Street and High Street in Shelby which produced Coca Cola bottles until 1978 when it closed down due to economic recession. In 1923, Roy Stephenson began production of diesel fuel at his father's old distillery on Upper Cumberland Road near present day Chapel Hill University campus; this would eventually lead to Stephenson Coal Company becoming a major coal producer for Duke Energy Corporation and other companies throughout the 1990s before being sold off in 2006 to Arch Coal Incorporated for $2 billion USD making him one of the largest coal producers in United States history.

Shelby was founded in 1868 by Dr. James Shelby, a missionary to China. The town grew quickly and soon reached its peak during the early 1900s with a population of over 20,000 people. However, after World War I the town started to decline and eventually disappeared from existence. Today, Shelby is best known for its annual Shelby County Fair which takes place in late August or early September.
