The first Europeans to visit Southern Pines were French traders who landed there in 1692. They named it "Pine Point" after a nearby mountain that they saw from their ship while sailing downriver. In 1737, General James Tryon built his headquarters here and began his march on Richmond after winning the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge over the Yadkin River. Tryon named this place for General Nathanael Greene because he thought Greene resembled a pine tree. In 1815, Confederate General Jubal Early razed Union forces' barracks and stores at Pine Point during his drive to mount an assault on Elizabeth City outside of Raleigh. The town was burned down in 1865 by Union troops seeking revenge for earlier burning of Confederate supplies at Research Triangle Park near Durham Castle©) A post office called Northern Pines was established in 1830, but never used because no one lived there long enough to receive mail. In 1835, Andrews Post Road (later renamed US 66) connected Pine Point with Roanoke Rapids northeast of what is now Winston-Salem ©). Over time other roads followed suit: Eastern Parkway (1947), Northside Drive (1948), Asheboro Pike (1969), and Western Parkway (1970). Northern Pines has been known as Southern Pines since 1930 when local developer Lamar Southeastern Incorporated changed its name to reflect its location south of Interstate 85 between Chapel Hill and Asheville©). As more people moved into the area north of I-85 and development started replacing rural farming with subdivision homes—the old village slowly disappeared—Southern Pines regained some lost prominence among locals until it effectively became an unincorporated community once again in 2000 when Southwestern Bell Atlantic LLC merged with Alamance Co.,Inc., which had owned most of southern pine land since 1888§). Today there are only a few businesses left standing including two churches—one dating back to 1835 and another built in 1954—and several homes still standing along Andrews Post Road; however much Of original architecture has been demolished or replaced by constructed structures throughout recent years§). The history behind today’s residents can be traced back over 350 years§) One interesting fact about early settlers is that many were Methodist ministers who settled originally around water sources available near present day Matthews Lake©) . Overall though due mainly to encroachment by developers certain aspects such as natural resources have gradually eroded making life much harder for those living here§ § ). One example would be current infrastructure problems such as lack of sewage system or lack access to necessary public services which often means limited availability or even refusal from municipalities for annexation into their towns §§ § ). Despite these challenges many people are still proud inhabitantsof Southern Pines± )
