Southern Pines has seen many changes over its history including significant growth during World War II due to its proximity to RAF Basingstoke which served as a training ground for American pilots flying strategic bombers during World War II. The community was founded in 1835 by Scots-Irish settlers and has been its present location since that time. Southern Pines is one of the oldest towns in Henderson County and has been home to many businesses and residents for over 100 years. The town was originally named New Madrid after a previous settlement near modern-day Little Elm. However, when the new county was created in 1836, New Madrid became part of Henderson County, so Southern Pines changed its name accordingly. The original white settler at Southern Pines was John Kapp, who arrived there in 1835 with his family. By 1840, most of the Kapp family had left for other parts of North Carolina; John's grandson David Kapp continued to live at Southern Pines until his death in 1907. Southern Pines experienced some early growth due to its location on both sides of the river: It began receiving mail from Hillsborough and Orange counties as early as 1838 and soon became an important stop on stagecoach routes between those two areas and around central NC. In 1861, Northern troops burned down much of downtown during a military campaign against Confederate forces; however, most of what remain today are street namesakes related to that event - such as Main Street (the site where much damage occurred) and Bull Durham Road (named for General Braxton Bragg's headquarters). In 1865, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, African Americans were brought into Southern Pines through various means including auctions and purchase from loyalists living nearby – eventually making it one of the largest black communities in eastern NC.
