Statesville is a town in Transylvania County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest town in North Carolina and is located on the Yadkin River. The first settler in Statesville was Nathaniel Philbrick who purchased land from the Cherokee Indians in 1786. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Philbrick's Ferry after himself and his family. In 1800, John Chilton settled in present-day Statesville and built a log cabin which he called "Chilton's Manor." This marks the beginning of Statesville as an established community. In 1827, J.D. Caldwell acquired 640 acres (253 hectares) of land south of present-day Statesville on which he erected a toll gate to collect fare for passage across the Yadkin River from Raleigh to Charlotte. This became known as Caldwell's Toll Road because it ran through today’s town center except for two blocks where it crossed Route 25A (now US 275). A post office was organized at this point, but no service was provided until 1851 when statehood was granted to North Carolina and mail began being sent through Trenton, New Jersey via that route In 1847, Ebenezer Trahan arrived from Georgia with his family and started farming on what is now Store Street near downtown Stateville. trahan named his farm "Trahan's farm" after himself and his father-in-law Abram Thomaseski Sr., also from Georgia who had immigrated to NC circa 1795 In 1850, Wm Silliman arrived with his family from Virginia and set up shop along Trade Street near today’s Post Office Building northeast of downtown Stateville Silliman soon realized that there were many people living around him without proper transportation so he started building wagons drawn by horses or oxen which could carry goods all the way to Raleigh or Charlotte overland or by boat . By 1860 there were several stores open along Trade Street including one run by Pemberton & Cobb who later became known as Pemberton Bros . At this time City Park lay just northwest of downtown Stateville off High Street between Second Avenue (now McGee Boulevard) east side of High street down into Powell Mill Creek then back up onto HighStreet past Trade Streets store frontage bisected by Fourth Avenue (now Patton Boulevard). From here it continued uphill approximately three quarters of a mile paralleling Fourth Avenue until reaching Today’s Grandview Drive Cemetery southwest corner Cemetery Drive having passed within five feet (.2 meters) of both cemeteries today

The city government changed hands several times before becoming fully controlled by Charlotte-Mecklenburg County officials in 1865.
