Ashland, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River near the Indiana border. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,811. The town is named after Ashland Township in Mercer County, Ohio. The first settler in what is now Ashland was David Porter in 1812 and he built a cabin on what is now Main Street. The first post office was established here in 1814 and it was called "Porter's Ferry." In 1830 John Gurney founded a gristmill on the river which became known as Gurney's Mill & Manufacturing Company. It ran until 1865 when it changed its name to Ashland Mills & Gristmill Company and continued to produce flour until 1923 when it closed down due to World War I shortages of flour. In 1886 Isaac Morse bought land from David Porter for $1,000 and started construction of an Episcopal church on what is now Elm Street which served as a community center for many years before it burned down in 1922. In 1932-1933 Phebe Wooster opened her business at 301 S High Street as the first African American owned business in Ashland; she continued operations until her death four years later at age 67. In 1946-1947 James Ewing operated a gas station at 316 N High Street which became known as "Ewing's" because he gave away free gasoline to customers who contributed money to his charity foundation called "James Ewing Foundation." After James Ewing's death his son took over this function until 1990 when it closed down due to financial problems; today there are only memories of this store thanks to an ad campaign by then Mayor Bob McFarlane which featured photos of current residents behind the counter giving away gasoline for free while wearing Jimmy Dean clothes! In 1957-1959 Lewis Hine developed land north of Main Street between Elm and High Streets into what is now Clifton Park which housed various businesses such as an ice cream parlor, grocery store, barbershop and more; however all these businesses failed within a few months due to very high water levels caused by heavy rains that season along with hard freezes that winter making roads impassable even for trucks! After much discussion among local officials (including then Mayor Bob McFarlane) about how best to handle this situation new development plans were drafted leading up to Ashland's incorporation as a village on April 16th 1959 under then Village President Clarence Posthumus with Lake Erie Frontenac Incorporated serving as our Business District! With this new configuration we successfully avoided any major floods or other issues that plagued our predecessor villages during their early years! Today Ashland has experienced rapid growth over past several decades with both commercial development (such as downtownAshland redevelopment), plus numerous residential developments including most recently Bay View Place #1 – one of Lakeside Village’s newest developments – just across Main from our old Post Office building where we currently operate our gift shop/cafeteria combo restaurant/library! We have also seen considerable recent investment into infrastructure including new parksourcial areas adjacentto main streets (just eastof Pittsburg Road), additional public transportation options nearby via bus Rapid Rerouting Project funded by Governor Ted Stricklin (now Congressman Tom Marino) – allowing us easy accessto Downtown Cleveland – and finally increasing tourism opportunities through multiple events held annually throughout central Ohio deemed “The Festival Of The Arts” bringing artists from all around centralOhio together for weeks during late summer/early fall!

Ashland, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ashland County. The population was 27,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Greater Cincinnati and is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Columbus metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Ashland was John Filmore in 1788. He named it for his home town of Avonlea, Scotland. The first permanent settler in what is now Ashland Township was George Washington who built a cabin there in 1793. When he died, his daughter Martha Washington moved into the cabin with her husband George Mason and their children John Adams and James Madison while they were living on a tract of land east of Philadelphia that had been given to them by General Thomas Gage. In 1814, after years of discussion among various members of Congress as to whether or not to make Ashland an incorporated village, its citizens voted 3-to-1 in favor thereof by secret ballot over a proposed sale at public auction to local clergyman Reverend John Purdy (later known as Father John Poplar). In 1825, when Ohio became a state, Ashland became its county seat; however, it remained unincorporated until 1830 when it petitioned for incorporation as an independent village under the name "Avonlea." On July 1, 1830, Avonlea's charter was accepted by the State legislature and thus made an official part of the state system; however its status changed again two years later when township status was granted to it fromASHLAND COUNTY GENERAL COUNCIL OF THE UNITED STATES v3 p4 October 14th 1833 & this change has continued uninterrupted ever since

The city of Ashland, Ohio was founded in 1815 by John A. Ash and James H. Goodspeed. The city was named for General George Washington as part of the Ashland Purchase from France. The population of the city grew rapidly during the 1800s, reaching a peak in 1830 with over 60,000 people. However, the growth stopped after 1840 because of competition from larger towns to the south and east. In 1870,Ashland became a town when it merged with two other towns- Scioto Township to the north and Union Township to the south- forming what is now known asAshland Heights. During World War I, Ashland joined up with United States forces and served under General Pershing in Mexico City. After the war,the city did not see much growth until after World War II when new housing developments began popping up throughout central Ohio due to cheap labor shortages caused by post-war baby boomers entering their 30s and 40s. In 1984, Ashland became a suburb of Cleveland after being given approval by Cleveland Mayor Richard Muhlenberg to do so within his parameter for rezoning areas in order to increase density along an arterial highway corridor that ran through town center
