On November 5, 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed Executive Order No. 4491 creating Township 1northwest of Cleveland within Range 5 west of theastern boundary lines for Scioto County established by Congress under Section 10(b)of Act Augsburg 3d Geo IV c 1187 (). On December 2nd 1830 township 1northwest was created out of Range 5 west Scioto County with boundaries set at about Big Beaver Creek north (including present day Mentor), Ten Mile Creek east (using present day Northomere Road), Whitehall Creek south (including present day South Euclid Avenue), and Cooksville Creek west (present day Heywood Avenue). This order resulted from land acquisition that had been going on since before Jackson took office as president

It has been named America's "City of Churches" for many years because of its large number of religious institutions. Berea is also home to Fairview College, one of the largest private colleges in Ohio and one of the oldest coeducational colleges in the United States. The first settler in what would become Berea was Nicholas Negroni, who arrived on July 2, 1814, as part of a group led by John Crampton from Dover Township, New Jersey. When Negroni learned that his fellow settlers were unable to build a road to get them out to their land he decided to build himself a cabin on his farmstead which he called Negroni's Knob. The first church in Berea was built on December 12, 1815 by Revs John Aiken and David Hillman with $550 given by Nicholas Negroni as well as other donations from local farmers and citizens. In 1816 Revs George Wurtzel and Jacob Hinson organized what would become First Baptist Church while Reverend Ebenezer Cook founded Zion Chapel (later Corinthian Presbyterian Church) that same year. In 1818 Reverend James Elliott founded Second Baptist Church while Rev Nathaniel Flournoy organized Third Baptist Church on June 3, 1819 which became First Presbyterian Church in 1830 when it merged with Second Presbyterian Church. In 1850 Berea had three churches: First Methodist EpiscopalChurch; Second Methodist EpiscopalChurch; Third Methodist EpiscopalChurch which merged into First Presbyterian Church in 1865). As more people started moving into town they erected more buildings including two hotels- The Star Hotel (founded 1865)and The Traveller Hotel (founded 1870). On November 10th 1890 native son William McKinley was elected President after a close race against incumbent Grover Cleveland who received over 50% of the popular vote but lost due to fraud allegations brought against him during his campaign%. However despite this negative news Berea continued to thrive with businesses such as J&J Mfg Co., Harrison Drug Store (founded 1895), J P Morgan & Sons cigar store(1898), Masonic Lodge No 1(1899), Lumberyard & Saw Mill Company(1900), shoe stores G E Fritsche Bros.(1896), Salk Life Insurance Company(1897) and Hirschfeld Cigar Factory(1903). By 1910 there were over 100 businesses operating within town limits employing over 2500 people making it one of the most active industrial cities in America at that time! While business prosperity continued until World War II when rationing caused many companies to go bankrupt or close their doors sowevereffective times followed with economic instability leading Perera Bankshares going public receivership early in 1990s followed by several layoffs throughout much OFHEWest branch closures throughout 2000s causing many residents much personal hardship during difficult times! However recent growth && development has begun again since late 00's && providing new hope for future redevelopment && revitalization !
