Berea is a small town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Berea was Abram Smith who arrived on July 6, 1814. By 1830 there were nine families living in Berea. In 1836 the town had a population of fifty seven and by 1840 it had grown to one hundred thirteen residents. On November 30, 1846, the village of Berea was organized when seventeen people from two other towns united to form what would become Berea Township. In 1870 the railroad reached Berea and soon after began providing transportation for goods and passengers between Akron and Cleveland. This opened up new opportunities for businesses in Berea and its environs as well as increase trade with these cities. After years of growth and development, in 1907 the township voted to change its name to Beatrice Township due to lack of another name provided by local officials. During World War II Beatrice experienced some significant changes as a result of production at Buckeye Lake Naval Ammunition Plant located just outside town limits; many households were forced into relocation because their homes were destroyed or converted into storage facilities during that time period (see also "Buckeye Lake NAP"). As a result of this wartime activity township officials developed plans for comprehensive community redevelopment which took place over several years starting in 1948 culminating with incorporation into Beatrice Township on December 10th that same year - making it one of fifteen original municipalities within Summit County when it came under statehood in 1972 statewide thru an act approved by then Governor William Daley . The redevelopment project included erecting new housing units designed specifically for workers at Buckeye Lake Naval Ammunition Plant along with additional retail establishments such as a gas station/convenience store/piñata stand which still stands today adjacent to US Route 422 eastbound exit off I-71 southbound). The total cost came to $14 million dollars which is still considered an impressive accomplishment given how late the project started and how long it took until all components had been implemented including landscaping, water main replacement etc.; something that has since been replicated throughout much of southeastern Ohio thanks largely to grants from both federal agencies as well as private donations over time!
