The first Europeans to explore and settle in Cincinnati were the French in the late 17th century. The area that is now Cincinnati was part of the Spanish territory of New Spain until 1541. In that year, a group of Spanish soldiers under Tenochtitlan discovered and explored what is now Cincinnati. After they returned from their expedition, they founded a small village called San Francisco de los Alpes on the outskirts of today's downtown. In 1795, General George Washington appointed Colonel James Hamilton as commander of forces sent to take possession of the Miami Valley east of Pittsburgh. When Hamilton reached Cincinnati, he found it abandoned and empty. He decided to find a way to populate and improve the area by building a fortification here.Hamilton began construction on Fort Wayne on May 25, 1795, but his work was delayed because of bad weather conditions. On November 3, 1795, after some skirmishes with Native Americans along the way, Hamilton finally arrived at Fort Wayne with his force and began construction on his new fortress. On January 14, 1800, General James Wilkinson arrived at Fort Wayne with an army commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John Sevier for the purpose of seizing control over all Ohio River settlements east of Pittsburgh without further ado . Wilkinson's force included about 10 transports carrying troops and supplies upriver from Kentucky) . On February 3-4 (the day after Lord Dunmore had proclaimed himself governor generalof Virginia), Wilkinson's main body disembarked at Louisville (now Louisville) and marched northwestward towards Dayton where he encountered Sevier's detachment marching southward from Pittsburgh A battle ensued which led to casualties among both sides; however ultimately Wilkinson withdrew northward towards Dayton without engaging Sevier or his forces The Battle Of Fallen Timbers resulted in US military losses totaling about 50 militiamen killed or wounded including Major General George Washington who personally led Confederate forces against American LtCol John Sevier
