East Liverpool is a census-designated place in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of East Liverpool was organized on December 12, 1814 by James Caldwell and others as a railroad stop on the Western Reserve Railroad. The first store in town was opened by J.G. Smith in 1815. A post office called East Liverpool was established in 1826, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. The first settler to arrive in what is now East Liverpool was Israel Doddridge who arrived on July 4, 1800 from Somerset County, Pennsylvania with his family and three slaves under the name "Doddridge and Company." He built a log cabin near what is now State Street and began trading with Indians for goods he could not find farther west. The town of East Liverpool was founded by the English in 1798. The area that is now known as East Liverpool was part of the township of Xenia. It was named for Nathaniel Essex, an American Revolutionary War soldier and member of the Ohio General Assembly. The first settler in what is now East Liverpool was John Cone. He moved from Xenia to a farm on the Scioto River in 1799. In 1810, a group of settlers organized into a company and began trading with Indians near present-day Lorain County. They later built a store and mill on the Scioto River. In 1815, they formed a new township, which included much of what is now eastern Lucas County. By 1830, most of what is today eastern Lucas County had been incorporated into the township of East Liverpool. It remained an independent municipality until it became part of the larger city of Cleveland in 1896.
