East Liverpool, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. The population was 21,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron-Canton, OH metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now East Liverpool were those who arrived on the "John Sutter" ship in 1827. They were followed by other groups over the next several years as new land was granted to them in various treaties and donations from Native Americans and Europeans alike. The town's name originates from a reference to a small creek that ran through its center and which locals called "Eliot". The town site was chosen because it had good soil for farming, strategic location for trade with neighboring towns, and easy access to transportation such as roads and waterways. In 1836, East Liverpool became one of four townships within Cuyahoga County when it was created from parts of Summit Township, Summit County, and Delaware Township. In 1855, it became part of the newly formed city of Cleveland due to heavy population growth in that area during the mid-19th century thanks to railroad construction. At that time, much of what is now eastern Cuyahoga County was rural farmland with few buildings or residents; east Liverpool consequently experienced relatively little development until after World War II when heavy industry began moving into eastern Cuyahoga County (and eventually all of northeastern Ohio) during the post-war boom period." East Liverpool, Ohio is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 27,594 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Cuyahoga County and the fourth-largest city in Ohio. The modern-day City of East Liverpool was founded by settlers from what is now Lorain Township on December 12, 1824 as part of the larger village of Westlake on what was then Newtown Township. On November 4, 1828, it became a part of the newly formed Cuyahoga County. The first settler in East Liverpool was Nicholas Snedeker who arrived on December 12, 1824 with his family from Connecticut. He built a log cabin near present day First Street and Third Avenue. In 1830 he bought 3 lots north of First Street for $680 cash and named them Snedeker's Station after himself and his brother Samuel (Nicolai) Snedeker Sr.. In 1834 he sold 1 lot to Gideon Keyser for $300 cash which became known as Keyser's Landing because Keyser had been an early captain in the American Revolution. In 1835 John D'Amore established D'Amore's store at Second Avenue and Fifth Street which became one of the most important businesses in town until it closed its doors due to financial difficulties in 1870. Other early businesses include Fetterman & Co.'s grocery store (1836), Atherton & Son's tannery (1847), Gorman Brothers stable ((1848), Hocking Foundry (1850), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Store (1910). It wasn't until 1840 that brick buildings began to be erected throughout town with Main Street becoming one of the first streets to be paved with bricks when Daniel Webster opened his brickyard there on October 17th following a trip to Cleveland made by US President James K Polk during their campaign for office that year. Webster would later become president Ulysses S Grant and continue business operations at his brickyard until 1898 when it closed due to lack of patronage or competition from other enterprises within town limits like Wabash Railroad Company yards across Sixth Ave., several blocks south along Euclid Avenue where cars were unloaded onto trucks for shipment eastward into Cleveland proper; Erie Canal boats moored next door used as unloading docks; Erie Canal barges also frequently stopped at this location while goods were being transferred between Lake Erie and downtown Cleveland; In 1850–51 three Temperance movement groups called "The Shakers" gathered here before traveling westward into Ontario County under leader Elijah Howe; they returned home safe but failed to establish themselves permanently within town limits despite having successfully planted about fiftyore trees around their new property – still standing today just off North Third Street adjacent to Ivar’s restaurant). After learning from Howe about how successful temperance preaching had been among Russian immigrants living east side of Genoa Road two years earlier - many members turned out for services conducted by Reverend Elias Boudinot at Congregational Church located on Elmira Road - "Shakerism" slowly grew back within East Liverpool over time although elements did leave eventually including Elijah Howe himself after substance abuse problems developed resulting in public disapproval both inside and outside his organization – finally disbanding circa 1860 amidst internal conflict mainly revolving around leadership matters – see: Shakerites history timeline .
