In 1865, Franklin, Ohio was the site of a Civil War battle that ended in a victory for the Union. In 1892, Ohio's first licensed gunsmith, John Browning, opened a shop on the corner of High and Market streets in Franklin. The shop was known as "The Browning Shop." In 1916, the Ohio Legislature passed a bill legalizing concealed carry of firearms with a valid license. The law took effect on July 1, 1916. In 1934, Franklin became the second city in Ohio to pass an ordinance outlawing handguns.
Franklin, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Franklin County. The population was 27,711 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th largest city in Ohio and its third-largest city by population within 10 miles of Cleveland. It is also home to many high-tech companies as well as two large hospitals. Franklin was founded by General George Washington during his stay in 1789–90 as part of his military expedition into what is now Erie County. In 1813, when Ohio became a state, Franklin became its capital and continued to serve that role until 1837 when York (now Lancaster) took over that role from Franklin. The current form of the name for Franklin—recorded first on a deed dated March 4, 1800, from Nicholas Biddle to John Dibble—was derived from an Indian word meaning "place where several families are situated." The area where Franklin now stands was first inhabited by the Shawnee people who called themselves "the People of the Woods". These early Native Americans hunted and gathered wild game near present-day Youngstown while living in small villages near Zoar Creek Reservoir on Lake Erie's east shore. The first European visitors to this area were French settlers who explored this region during their exploration of central Canada in 1684–85 under Governor Frontenac. A landing party led by Captain Samuel de Champlain explored this area on July 20, 1688; they encountered no native inhabitants but found abundant natural resources including coal and lead ore west of modern day Cleveland. In 1795–96 Major James Kieft traveled through this area on his way from Sandusky to Greenfield; he reported finding rich salt deposits west along present-day Interstate 775 between Zoar Creek Reservoir and Canfield Road (then US 12). This new land would become known as Kieth Township which lay within today's Harrison Township after major James Kieft sold it to John Dibble for $1 million on November 1, 1796. In 1813–14 American Revolutionary War veteran Colonel David Wilkinson set up shop at what is now Winchester Tavern nearpresent-day Fairview Heights; he had been recruited by militia leader Anthony Wayne to lead an army against British forces invaders had appointed General Thomas Gage as their captain general with authority over all Indians east of Lake Erie following Queen Anne's proclamation calling for such action pursuant to her Proclamation No., 3 December 1763 (known then as An Act for Regulating Trade with Foreign Nations). On October 25, 1813 Wilkinson surrendered Winchester Tavern unconditionally to British troops leading General John Cushing’s column; he left behind three barrels of gunpowder which were used successfully against British pickets at Berea seven days later In 1830 Congressman Andrew Johnson founded Greenfield Village here while serving in Congress from Indiana Territory; he named it after himself because “Greenfield” lay just outside Indiana's borders northwest of Chicago During World War II local firms like Wernick & Whitney produced munitions needed for war production such as rockets used by Allied Forces in Europe including Operation Overlord Aftermarket parts company JBL produce speaker systems using THX audio technology licensed from Sony Corporation
