Franklin, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mahoning County. The population was 753 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Mahoning County after Youngstown and Akron. Franklin has a rich history that can be found throughout its downtown area, which contains many historical landmarks and businesses dating back to the 1800s. Additionally, Franklin is home to two universities: The University of Toledo (Doane College) and Cleveland State University. Located on the southern edge of Lake Erie, Franklin was first settled by Europeans in 1795 as Frenchtown after Fort Duquesne was built nearby on land owned by France. In 1803, General Andrew Jackson's army burned down Frenchtown while besieging Fort Erie; this event helped make Franklin a part of Ohio Territory under American control. After Ohio became a state in 1813, it passed an Act incorporating the town of Franklin into Mahoning County; this act made Franklin one of the largest towns in Ohio and served as its provisional capital until 1818 when Youngstown replaced it as the county seat. In 1830, John Cranch erected his mill on High Street near today's corner of Broad and Washington Streets for what would become known as Cranch cotton gin production until 1840 when he moved his business to more efficient mills located downstream along Mill Creek due to flooding from heavy rains that year. By 1850, over 100 homes had been built around what is now First Baptist Church building on Market Street across from City Hall Park; even then there were only 10 residents living in town proper with only 14 working out-of-town jobs providing income for all residents combined! One reason why early settlers chose to call their new community "Franklin" rather than just "Township" may have been because they felt like they were already given something special - both physically (the location on high ground) and politically (city status within easy reach of major centers). Franklin is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Franklin County. The population was 11,571 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Franklin County. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Franklin were French missionaries in 1614, who named it Miamisburg on their journey from Canada to America. In 1795, General George Washington and his army passed through the area on their way southward during the Adams–Onís Treaty negotiations; they left behind a military encampment that still stands today at Point State Park near downtown Franklin. In 1805, James Kapp built a log cabin here while he was surveyor for Harrison and Lawrence counties. He donated land to become what is now known as Kapp's Grant Township (now Muskegon Heights). The town site was surveyed by Jabez Bowen in 1816 and moved to its present location two years later when he purchased of land from James Kapp for $60 ($6 per acre). As more settlers arrived, kernans (a type of corn) became available for planting and Commerce began to grow; brick production did not begin until after World War II. In 1819, Nathan Bedford Forrest founded a small plantation here known as Forrest's Landing that supplied slaves with food and clothing until 1865; it burned down in 1862 due to Forrest's efforts to keep it running as an auction house. In 1830, General David Dixon formed the Reserve Company with men from Morrow County to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) northeast of where Commerce now stands; this property became Marion Township (now Muskegon Heights) three years later when Dixon organized township government there under an Act of Congress made void by state law because much of Ohio had been acquired by Michigan Territory via purchases during President Andrew Johnson's tenure as president.)
