After years as "Carverstown", "Carver Heights", "Washington Heights", etc., it reverted back to its original name on October 14, 1924 following ratification by voters of an act entitled: "An Act To Repeal The Origination Of Certain Towns InChampaign County And To Change Their Names." On November 3rd 1847 A&P grocery store opened its doors at 424 State Street after being founded by Ebenezer Scudder (founder/president/chief executive officer) under license from Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation dated December 12th – just days before General Order No 1 went into effect ordering all slave owners to sell their slaves within six months or face military action protected by section 4(a)of the National Defense Act designed “to secure good harvests during wintertime” starting January 1st 1850 effective until July 1st 1850….
