German traders explored area in 1793 before British traders arrived in 1795 who named it Geauga after George Washington's father General John Forbes Maclay that settled near present day Mentor where Gahanna began operations until 1800s when land transactions led to reduced population size which left few clues about history or current vicinity until 1812 when James Kinsman platted new town site from eastern part of present day Cuyahoga County on lakeshore east side then called Geauga point because Indians did not name this place according to their language but rather named it Mahoning Valley because Mahoning River flowed through this area then there were three other towns – Sandusky Heights (founded 1796), Mayfield (founded 1800) and Perrysburg (founded 1802).
