In 1902, an American company named Winchester began producing automatic firearms using compressed gas instead of powder or shot. Maumee, Ohio is a town in Lake County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,731 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name means "clear water" in the Lenni Lenape language. The first people to live in what is now Maumee were the Potawatomi and Shawnee Indians. They built small villages on issues around land that they claimed as their own. In 1795, John Adams and his party of settlers arrived from Massachusetts and foundedAdamstown on Upper Maumee Creek near present-day Delaware Avenue and Euclid Street. The first post office was established in 1796 at what is now Sherman Road and State Route 219A (now US-12). Adamsville was renamed Maumee by Governor George Clinton in 1802 after General James Dearborn's expedition against the Shawnees had passed through that area several years earlier. In 1807, a group of about seventy men led by Captain Nicholas Hobbs traveled upriver from Vandalia to purchase land from the Potawatomi for $1 million dollars. After months of negotiations with Chief Tecumseh and other leaders of the confederacy, they finally acquired enough land to build an incorporated village named Hobbsburgh on July 16, 1807 just south of where it stands today on Main Street between Park Boulevard (now Ontario) and Washington Boulevard (now FirstEnergy Drive). At first only male inhabitants were allowed to live there; but soon women too started arriving as well. As more residents moved into Hobbsburgh, they began purchasing property adjacent to it until alluvial soil became available within a few miles of downtownMaumee proper center on high ground east of Harrison Avenue mowing down trees so that farmers could build homes without slash & burn techniques which would have damaged ancient forests In 1830 Abram Cuyler erected a log cabin near modern day Newmark Road/State Route 422 which served as headquarters for his lumber company during its early years operations before becoming known as Cuyler House National Historic Landmark (marked off by state route 22 northbound) . From here he directed shipments out overland via stagecoach connections to Cleveland or points west During much of this time frame various Native American nations - including the Oneida Confederacy - operated among themselves peacefully through trade agreements based largely upon goods produced along their respective borders
