Maumee, Ohio is a small city located in the central part of today’s Maumee, Ohio. It was founded in 1853 by John C. Lewis and his family as the town of Liverpool on the Scioto River. The Lewis family served as its first Mayor from 1854-1857 and also donated land for a public school which opened in 1860. In 1870, the town name was changed to Maumee after it became part of the newly formed United States Territory of Michigan. The official name given to Maumee during its early years was “Liverpool” because that is what most residents called it – until 1895 when they changed it to “Maumee” after their hometown (now Ottawa) within Michigan. In 1865, a group of businessmen led by Sidney Sayers purchased 7200 acres (28 km2) east and northeast of present-day Maumee for $10 per acre ($140 per km²). They named this new tract Enterprise Park and began developing it into one of the most important agricultural areas in eastern Ohio. In 1814, the first permanent settler in Maumee was George Washington. He and his family founded a log cabin on the Scioto River. A year later, he married Susanna Pointon and they had two children:George Washington (1797-1837) and Martha Ann (1799-1847). In 1821, Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance, which forbade slavery in The United States. This ordinance led to mass migration of slaves from Georgia to Ohio. The growth of slave trade in the region also contributed to the economic development of Maumee. The city was platted in 1825 by John Cephus and named for General William Tecumseh Sherman, an American general who fought at Chickamauga Creek. Sherman was a powerful leader during the American Civil War, leading many successful raids into Confederate territory. After the war ended, he returned to Ohio and became governor of that state. In 1868 he became Ulysses S Grant's second Secretary of War and served until his death in 1883;during this time he oversaw important changes within Ulysses S Grant's administration including women's suffrage and Reconstructionism in America. In 1888Maumee voters approved annexation by Toledo into its city government;the annexation created new political boundaries that remain today defining both cities' histories even as they compete for economic development opportunities on opposite sides of downtown Toledo corridor
