In 1813 when the United States acquired land east of Toledo along the Scioto River for military purposes it decided to move westward and established an outpost at what would become Maumee Township under Captain James Caldwell which lay within today’s Maumee Township boundaries dating back to June 25th 1813 when Captain Caldwell organized one hundred soldiery into six companies march ing out from Fort Dearborn which were known as “Caldwell’s Rangers”

Maumee was founded in 1792 by Nicholas Maumee and his wife, Elizabeth. The village was named for Nicholas' father, John Maumee. In 1805, the town became a part of the Toledo area and was renamed Lucasville. The post office opened in 1812 and remained operational until 1954.
