Maumee is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,874 at the 2000 census. The name comes from the Potawatomi word "maumee," meaning "to turn back." Maumee was established in 1814 by General George Rogers Clark as part of the Northwest Territory. It was named for John Maumee, an early settler. Municipal services include fire and police departments; public schools includingElementary and Secondary Schools; a library; and a single-family housing development called Gateway Village. A large industrial park is located in the town center. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Maumee in 1814 when General George Rogers Clark's force invaded the Northwest Territory. They were led by Captain David Dunbar and his group of riflemen known as the Catawbas. The area that became Maumee was part of Ottawa County until it was organized into Lucas County on February 14, 1824. David Dunbar's post office opened in 1815 at present day Main Street and First Avenue (now Duncan Avenue). In 1825, John Dickinson built a gristmill on high ground near present day Park Avenue and Maple Street (now Dearborn Road). He also founded nearby Grange Hall which served as a meeting place for farmers, merchants, and political leaders during this time period. In 1830, Richard Mott settled at Corners Run about two miles southeast of town on land he had acquired from Delaware Company Director Nicholas de la Halleigne. In 1840, Daniel Webster bought land north of town from James Condon for $1 million dollars US dollars (). Webster donated this land to build what would become known as Gateway Village which includes many businesses such as Jardine & Cleanings Incorporated (), Dental Supply (), Applebee's restaurant (), American Honda dealership (), Sears Roebuck & Co., ()and more (). In 1945 local resident Don Nehring started selling ice cream out of his truck around Main Street corner fromcurrent White Castle Restaurant (). Today there are over 60 stores within Gateway Village!
