The first post office in New Franklin was established on November 12, 1830. The name change came about because many residents were confused when they saw Old World names such as "Franklin" or "Winchester" applied to their new town while their ancestors had settled there over two centuries earlier under different names including - Bigelow (1753), French (1764) and Vaner (1693). In 1839 Union forces burned down most of what remains of Waco Methodist Church – one of America's earliest religious burns – during their Raid on Dayton for civilian supplies that may have supported Confederate forces during the American Civil War.
